Green Tea China Gunpowder

This tea is perhaps the most popular green tea from Zhejiang, south of Shanghai. Known as Gunpowder due to its tightly rolled leaves resembling small pellets, this specialty tea offers a unique brewing experience. When steeped, the leaves unfurl with a gentle crackle.

Gunpowder tea is known for its bold, strong, and tangy flavor. If you find it too intense, simply discard the first brew—this allows the second infusion to reveal the tea’s more delicate and nuanced character. In North Africa, the first brew is traditionally served with fresh mint leaves, creating the classic thé à la menthe.
